Destination Birthday Party + Secrets Resort Cap Cana
Eat, Drink and Be 40!
When I finally came to the realization that I was turning forty I knew that I had to do something big. I began planning a trip back to Cancun Riviera Maya because my husband and I had such a wonderful time at the Secrets The Vine Resort & Spa. I got with my destination travel specialist and began the planning process and then the unthinkable happened…hurricane Harvey hit Houston awfully bad. Since my birthday is in April, I wanted to go during that time but with the effects of Harvey (and other major hurricanes) some of my close friends were unable to pay to go so soon. So I got with my travel specialist and decided to move the date and location.
One of my besties moms was also planning her seventieth birthday party around the same time so we decided to have a double party destination getaway. We had some of the same guests on our invitation list so it only seemed fitting. It was then that we decided to go to the Secrets Resort & Spa in the Dominican Republic. Our travel group is a huuuuge fan of Secrets Resorts so we had heard that the Cap Cana location was opening at the end of 2016 and planned to go so this was perfect timing.
If you’ve never been to a Secrets Resort then you are truly missing out on life! From the white sands and blue water to the endless drinks and delectable bites, they are sure to please every time. What I love about Secrets Resorts is that they are a consistent brand at every location we visit. The staff is always delightful. The rooms are always luxurious and the food is always cooked to perfection.
My husband and I booked a Jr. Suite with an ocean view and ended up right in front of it! Even though we had to look beyond the pool it still was a great view. The skies were blue and the water seemed endless. The room came with a king sized bed, love seat lounge area (both inside and out) as well as a balcony tub. Our favorite feature in our room was the shower which had three shower heads (two in the ceiling and one on the wall). The water pressure was perfect and always the right temperature. I absolutely LOVED showering at night because I slept a whole lot better.
Felix escorted us to our room. He was super nice and educated us on the features of the room and resort. I saw him around the property a few times and he always made sure we were taken care of. Such a great host.
One thing Secrets Resort is great at is acknowledging special occasions. When my husband got married, my parents were celebrating their anniversary and they put a “happy anniversary” banner on their door. Since I was celebrating my birthday they had a “happy birthday” banner waiting for me at our room. It’s little things like this that make your experience much more pleasant.
Although I didn’t eat very often when I did eat it was great! From the nachos to the steak and even the chicken fried rice. It was all delicious and had me wanting more. The bartenders and wait staff were always friendly and kept the drinks flowing. I provided my guests with personalized cups and the bartenders didn’t give us a hard time using them.
Since this is an all-inclusive resort, you can have unlimited meals and drinks. Even room service is 24 hours a day. The restaurants close at certain times each night but there is one place that stays open all night. They carry pastries and small bites like sandwiches, coffee and other drinks as well.
Breakfast in the Market Cafe was incredible. There were several options to choose from which made it a bit overwhelming (in a good way). If you were vegan or vegetarian, on Keto or Atkins, #teamNoCarbs or someone who just wanted to enjoy it all…this was the place to be!
Fun In The Sun…Secrets Style
I had my birthday party poolside on Saturday which was so much fun. Everyone had their personalized cups and was able to find lounge chairs together so we hooked up the blue tooth speaker and let the music play. Later that night we went to Desires where I asked my guests to wear black with a splash of turquoise.
Each night the Secrets Resorts has some form of entertainment for guests to enjoy. We went to Desires every night but the last night we were there. Friday night they had a live band singing cover songs from artists like Bruno Mars, Justin Timberlake, and more. Saturday night it turned into a nightclub so we danced while the DJ spun today’s hits and classics. And Sunday night we all broke out into karaoke mode which was very fun. The downfall about Desires is that the main door doesn’t shut behind guests that go in and out so it stays open letting the air conditioning out. This meant that it got hot very quickly.
Our group decided to do a rum tasting, cigar tour, and the mall. It was an excursion that we booked through our travel specialist for a very low price. It was fun because we got to see different parts of the island as well as have group fun with each other.
What Should I Wear Today?
I packed rather light for this trip because I knew there wouldn’t be a lot going on. The majority of the time was spent in swimsuits and cover-ups with a pair of flip-flops to match. I mean, who needs to back jeans and dresses for vacation? So my wardrobe consisted of 2 mesh swimsuit cover-ups, 4 swimsuits, 3 jumpsuits, 2 pairs of flip flops, 1 pair of tennis shoes, 2 pairs of shorts with matching tops and some black wedges. I did have to pack an additional all-white outfit (slacks and a shirt) for a 70th birthday party we were also going to.
Secrets Resorts do have restaurants that require a more dressy attire but we didn’t go to them since we didn’t bring clothing for them. The attire required was no
Relax, Relate, Release
After all of the fun we had, I made time to collect my thoughts and sit by the water. Each time I go on vacation I try to make time to really sit still and hear what God has to say to me and to regroup before heading home. It’s important for me to sit and reflect on my personal life, business, and spiritual being.
