Wedding at Tuscan Courtyard | Marissa + Melvin
How We Met
Marissa reached out to me back in 2019. After giving her some pricing info, we scheduled a call, and I remember hearing her bubbly personality and thinking, “this girl is so much fun.” I knew I had to do her hair and makeup at Tuscany Courtyard in the Spring.
When she came into the salon, we talked like we had known each other for years! We laughed and joked around and talked about how she met her hubby-to-be and how he got on one knee.
Who knew that her wedding would be rescheduled just five months later due to COVID-19. I felt sooo bad, especially for her and another bride of mine, Chanel, because their weddings were both left hanging in the balance as the city shut down in mid-March just days before their weddings. Marissa is also a frontline worker so being at work long hours to help sick patients would have also pushed her date back.
Once we all got the news that the pandemic would be around for a while, she moved her date to December to help protect her family and friends.
The Wedding
Marissa was pretty chill on her wedding day. She was chatting with her mom and bridesmaids and poppin’ bottles like other brides I’ve worked with. Her bridal party was fun to work with, making our job easier.
HAIR
Marissa is natural and wanted to wear her curly locks in their natural state with added volume, so I suggested clip-ins. I saw natural clip-in extensions becoming more and more popular, so we decided to give them a shot, and they worked fabulously. I installed about six rows of hair extensions, tamed her edges, and applied her headpieces to the side and back of her style.
Makeup
Since it had been about a year since we’d done her trial session, I didn’t know what to expect on her wedding day. Sometimes brides change their minds about the look they want. I literally have had brides change their look while in my chair on their wedding day, so this could go the same way…and it did.
Marissa loved the makeup I had done for her trial but loved the blue tones I used on her eyes for her bridal shower and wanted to change to that look. Well, I don’t usually carry blue eyeshadows in my kit on wedding day because it’s not a popular “bridal” look. To not disappoint my bride on her wedding day, I told her that I would incorporate blue eyeliner into her look as her “something blue” to keep the look timeless and classic but with a pop of color, and she loved it! I finished her look with airbrush makeup (because she had an outdoor wedding), lashes, and a pink-nude lip.
The bridal party and mom got custom makeup looks using a neutral color palette.
What did she say
“My wedding had 3x dates due to Covid (the struggle) & Nyoka was amazing! She worked with me through it all & made sure it remained wonderful! All my girls were so beautiful ❤️ She definitely brought good vibes & made us all flawless queens! I would recommend her work for any event & will definitely book again! Thank you for making me feel like royalty on my special day! ❤️”
